18 QUAD-CITY TIMES Wednesday, May 6, 1987 Davenport family wins weekend trip By Julie Elaele QUAD-CITY TIMES A Davenport family will be the honored guests for a weekend in Villisca, Iowa, for a Heritage Day celebration that includes commemorating the 75th anniversary of eight unsolved ax murder deaths. Richard and Rose Marie Schroeder were the winners of the "weekend in Villisca contest" and will claim their prize June 12-14. Villisca is located in southwestern Iowa and has a population of 1,400. "I never heard of it before," Richard Schroeder said. He said his wife entered the contest because she's from a small town.

The couple's children, ages 11, 13 and 16, are especially excited about the trip, he said. Aside from hotel accommodations, prizes include free tickets to various performances, free playing time on the golf course and a pint of homemade horseradish. "They have two guys that make some illicit horseradish," he said. The family will also have a street named after them. Schroder said the fact that the culprit in eight ax murders hasn't been caught doesn't bother his family much.
