For those unfamiliar with Mexican food or whose Spanish is a little rusty, each item is carefully described in English next to the Mexican title. The third appetizer on the menu is a cheese crisp, a luscious flour tortilla covered with melted Cheddar cheese. It is served at every dining table compliments, of the house. The main course can be chosen from three distinct areas.

Each serves a tossed salad along with other special items. "Mexican Combinations" include Spanish rice, refried beans and the dinner of your choice along with the salad (there are six choices in this selection). "Ol'R combinations are very popular, especially the Veracruz ($3.95) which includes a beef taco, enchilada, and tamale," explains Rosburg. All the combination plates are between $3 and $4. Other combinations are the Sop-nora ($3.95) which includes two beef tacos and an enchilada and the Baja ($3.95) which is a plate of three large beef tacos.

The second main course area is the "Mexican Specialties." These dinners run from $3.95 for the Tortilla Pizza which is seasoned beef, refried beans, guacamole, and tomatoes on a flour tortilla covered with cheeses, to $6.75 for the Came Asada. The Came Asada is filet seasoned with a special marinade. "THE BIRRITO Especial (two flour tortillas rolled and stuffed a special mixture of shredded beef, green chile, and spices) and the Carne Asada are two popular specialty items," says Rosburg. The last area to choose your main course is for those who aren't particularly drawn to Mexican food and is known as "A-merican Specialties." With the American Specialties By Kathy M. Consider, then, an un-sual Quad-City restaurant with a south of the border flavor. The atmosphere is superb, and the prices are non-inflationary. On the corner of ltfth Street and John Deere Expressway in Moline, across from South Park Mall is Tortilla Flats, Restaurante de Mexico. This restaurant (the name was taken from a novel written by John Steinbeck), is one of a group of Quad-City eating places owned by Foodmak-er, Inc Foodmaker is a subsidary of Ralston Purina. Others in the Food-maker group include the Boar's Head, Moline, and the Dock, Davenport.

TORTILLA Flats has been in Moline April W73 and its manager, Gene Rosburg, says it presently is the only Tortilla Flats in the The atmosphere of Tortilla Flats adds much to your evening out. The walls and ceilings of the cocktail lounge and dining area are decorated with original Mexican tiles and artifacts. There's even a weathered photo of Pancho Villa. Fires usually crackle in the fireplaces of the dining rooms. Waitreses are dressed in a true Mexican style, with short full orange skirts topped by white peasant blouses.

The waiters are very visible in their bright orange shirts. The dinner menu has a wide range of specialities. ARE the only place in town where you can get a full complete Mexican dinner," Rosburg says, and the extensive menu verifies his claim. Dinner opens with an appetizer. The customer can choose a guacamole dip or a quesa- you get sonora style potatoes, and the salad along with the main item.

You may choose from a beef kabob a top sirloin a filet ($6.75) and shrimp YOU CAN finish the evening with an American dish of ice cream or go Mexican and order a Bun-uelo which is a tortilla covered with honey, cinnamon and ice cream. Tortilla Flats' evening hours are 5 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5 to 11:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 4 to 10 p.m. Sunday.

It is open for lunch Monday through Friday 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The luncheon menu is basically the same as the evening, with slightly smaller' portions, Rosburg says. HAPPY HOUR is daily, Monday through Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. During' this time you may order from the distinct cocktail list which contains such drinks as the Pancho Villa, the TNT, the Tequila Mockingbird, the Toro Bravo and a Banana Flats and get two for the price of one.

"We are said to have the best Margaritas in the Quad-Cities. Our Sangria is also excellent," Rosburg adds. TORTILLA Flats has a relaxed atmosphere where casual attire is very acceptable. The food, which seems to have something for everyone's taste, Is excellent and reasonable "We try to relate to everyone," Rosburg explains, and their business seems to verify the statement. 0 I i Complete Dinner 1 2 Noon to 6 P.M.
