L. BARTHOLOMA, AGED RESIDENT OF WILTON, DIES WILTON, Ia. July -Ludwig William Bartholoma, aged 89, for 26 years a resident of Davenport and for the past 20 years a resident of Wilton, died of infirmities due to old age at 7:30 o'clock last evening at the residence of his two sons, Fred and Henry, five miles southeast of Wilton. Mr Bartholoma was born in Germany, December 5, 1831 and came this country 46 years ago 10- cating in Davenport. For 26 years he lived in that city and moved to Wilton 20 years ago, making this vicinity his home since.

The survivors, are the widow, three of Moville, Fred and Henry of this vicinity, and three daughters, Mrs Willifm Petersen of Davenport, Mrs. John Steffens Bennett, Ia. Mrs John Mohr of Wilton vicinity. Twenty-four grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren survive. The funeral will be held from the home of his sons, Fred and Henry on Sunday, afternoon at 2 o'clock.

Two of the large mines at Buxton were idle Friday and one at Lovilla because the men quit work. The dissatisfaction is more particularly among the day men. It was reported from Albia that walkouts were threatened in other mines. President J. C.

Lewis of the thirteenth district, United Mine Workers of America, which is the district including Iowa and Missouri, addressed a letter to the operators a. few days ago in which he pointed out that Iowa miners were leaving the mines because of dissatisfaction with working conditions. These miners feel that the adjustments made by tire United States coal commission unjust. 'He stated that the number of minin the state had fallen from 17,000 to one about 12,000. The disers parity between the increase given day labor and monthly men and the increase to contract men is said by Mr Lewis to be one of the chief causes of dissatisfaction.

The Knights of Columbus in this country have presented France a statue of Lafayette, and Godes is one of 250 knights who will leave this country to be present at the dedication, August 21.

The statue has been erected at Metz. The knights will be, received, by the government and will be conducted on a tour of the battlefields. Mr Godes will visit his birthplace in Luxembourg before returning. Gypsies at Charlotte Two autos and two truck loads of gypsies, the same bunch that were in Maquoketa long enough to pick Chas. 3 Take Examinations For the past three days County Supt. E. R. Stoddard has been giving teachers' examination at the courthouse here. About 25 teachers were taking the examinations.

There was a shortage of teachers in Jackson county last spring and schools were obliged to close because no teacher could be secured. Mr. Stoddard, however, states, that there is apparently teachers to supply the demand for the fall term.
