10 tre bt to 4j fta. at at 12-75 A 50 mc, ax.e Lz at ic er A i yune that two large barges have been fitted up at Kennerville, Louisiana, for an immense floating apiary. Each Darge has a capacity of a thousand hives of bees. These will be towed slowly up the river durina the spring and early summer, passing Davenport about first week in June, and arriving in St. Paul about thf first of August; returning will reach Davenport In September and Louisiana in October or Xovtmbcr.

The Picayune- gives a complete history of the novel uu- dcrtaking which is extremely iattreslicg. It says Mr. Penine has been in I ouisiar.u. eighteen months studying up the bee business, an-i preparing for the grand on ward movement for watch he will be ready In a few days. His iilan is to start with bis bee palaces and is 1,000 colonies from Southern Louisiana when the boDey flowers are in full bloom, to remtin but a day or to at a landing, and move up each niebt to another Undicg and fre-u field.

He Hunks the bees of from one to two thousand colonies will take tbe cream from country around tne landing from one or two mile? distant in one or two davs. In this manner he exp cjs to move up the Mississippi to St Paul, a dutaoce of nearly 2.U00 m.lts, where he will arrive about tbe last of July. Returning, he will halt about two months somewhere above St. Louis, and will reach Louisiana with bis palaces and bees In October. It wil b-j his object to take the auluanal flowers at each point in their prime precisely as be ke the spring flowers op the river.

He expects his early swarms on his boats to increase II Ilium I. II I m. The colonies of bees are in hives with movable comb, on the most approved plan of modern hives. These stand in four walls, five hives, one above tbe other, nearly the whole length of the boat, about 200 hives in each line The walls of tbe colonies on the right side and on tbe left side have openings for the bees to come out on the water front. A space of two feet between the hives and the guards answers for a gallery for the bee man to walk on in front of the hives.

In tho middle of the boat there are two other walls of colonies, 250 hives in each, facing an inner court six feet in width. The bees from these colonies reach the open air through the skylignt opening In the roof above the court. Between the first and second rows of hives from tbe out side there is an aisle three leet in width, for the convenience of the bee man in handling the hives and the honey. The distance from the barse deck to the roof over tho colonies is fifteen feet. Tbe space below decks is ten feet in width and about seven feet high, and is to be used for sleeping apartments, making and repairing hives, handling and extracting honey and nuttirjn it in mark' ctable shape.

The dining-room and cook ing will be on the steamer that tow3 the bee fleet. To run the, steamer and manage the barges and bers, from fifteen to twenty hands will be needed. The cost of the whole establishment, barges, bora, steamer and the complete outfit will not be much short of $15,000. Mr. Pcrrine has been engaged in tbe honey business in Chicago twelve or thirteen years, and has lately made it a special study.

He has dealt largely in California honey. He ex pects to find the best market for bU honey in Europe. Honoy In the comb usually sells at about twenty cents a pound wholesale. Strained honey sells at whole sale at seven or eight cents a pound, or from eighty cents to ajdollar a eallon. A gallon of strained honey weighs about twelve pounds.

The plan of moving bees to get the benefit of different ranges and fresh flowers has been tried a small way in some parts of Europe. They are moved both in carts and in boats. Bees that go out of their hives in the morning in search of food or honey, from floating apiaries, have no trouble in finding their hives, aa they know their home by comparative location, and their particular hiva, by form and color. The average yield of honey per colony In the North is 25 pounds, sometimes much larger. Ia Louisiana 13 to the hie, or 144 pounds, are not an urj sual yield, and aa tlsewhi-re.

several hundred pr Unas. Mr. Perrine expects to obtain from '-is colonies from 100 to 300 poun.ls, ami to sell his honey at an average of ten ctcu, and the 3,000 hives he expecte to averse $15 to tbe bive. Willow make an excel lent bee range. They are in blosfom week in LouIsiaio, and but frcm one to two weeks In th.j Nurth.

Honey is now used in preparing tohsc co for market, and by brewers in making ale, and for med.icir.al, culinary and othur purposes. 1 be Mississippi river is the only great liver on the globe running south 2300 miles through a region uu euca bouey rejources aa the country between 2ew Orleans and St. Paul. Eiiitok Dr. mocbat -D-ar Sir: Having been a reader of vour moat valuable paper for the last twenty vears, and having once been a residtntof your county, and emigrating west ab ut four veais ago, I thought you and many of the readers of the Democrat would like to hear fiom western Iowa. We have just passed through one of the most terrific storms that man has seen in this part of tho country for several years, consisting of Snow, rain and very heavy wind. Although the damage was not as great in this part as might have been expected. Many of the farmers have been plowing for cern, but the late storm has etopped that for a few days, owing to the ground being too wet.

Small firaiu is looking solendidly, and has the appearance of an abundant crop. Also the fruit, if not killed by tho late frosts, will be very plenty, such as we have of course we have not the varieties that you have in the eastern part of the state but all we need Is the time, and we will compare with any part cf the state, tbe soil belns auapted to fruit raising. Our county is settling np very repldlv this spring by people from pood old Scott and Clinton counties. Crawford county is one of the finest stock grazing counties In the state, owing to its fine grass and abundance of pure water. If you know of any good stock man who wants to move west, direct him to Crawford county.

Jade Thayer urges some public or pri vate action having for its object the com pletion of the C. W. Kailroad. He that some $000,000 have already been expended on this roaa between Clinton and Iowa City, for which there is to how tbo $160,000 paid for it on foeclos-ure sale. It is understood that the purchasers -would be willing to put this amount into a new company, if one were organized that could show sufficient vital energy to finish the road.

It would cost to complete the road about 500,000. Sup-pise a new company should be organized ana issue bonds to the amount of On the 80 miles of road this would mike less than 9.000 to tho mile. The new company would start out with pur chasers for $100,000 ot the bonds. The new would have about 30 miles of track laid. It wauld have one loco motive, two depot buildings, almost the entire right of way purchased and paid for, a good show of the trading completed, and why should not a large portion of the 500,000 of bonds be nlacad along tj line of the road Some of those bonds would be subscribed for in Clinton.

Barlingtan Uawkeye "Out here in Iowa the Republicans have been keeping a silent, if nt somewhat profane, meditation upon thig mat ter, and are becoming very tired of the monotony. With the exception of one lonely postmaster, they have made up their minds to 'speak out in meeting at the first opportunity." Which is simply infamous While it is true that the per son alluded to Edward Russell, of the Davenpurt flazette, is postmaster there it may not be truo that he supports the Hayes policy merely to retain his office as postmaster.

He supports Hayes from principle. He did not always think' as Mr. Hayes thinks, but does now. Was Mr. Haves' policy towards the South du ferent had he declined to withdraw the troops from Louisiana and South Caroli na, and to appease and mollify by ap pointments and recommendations as he has, then would Mr.

lRuesell have resigned his place, hurled his official commission at the President's head, and without any post office at all, preach ed'the policy of peace and reconciliation, even as he now does in his cordial cn dorsement of Sir. nayes branding the President as one unfit for the office as one dishonestly recreant to his duty and his trust. J. hat these things are so, no one who knows Mr. Russell, and knows how thorough ms conversion, can tor a moment doubt.

When he sees the sign in the political sky he accepts it and wor ships. He strikes for principle, caring for no place, no emolument, no office and even now it is said that his intimate political friends have frequently to labor with him to restrain him from resigning his office as postmaster, as he is often and again inclined, if not quite determined to do, so that no such vile imputation of mere selfish greed, as is thrown out eo often by the Hiwkeye and other anti-Hayes papers, may attach to or rest against him. Such being the bottom faots in the case, we calmly bespeak a greater degree of fraternal courtesy towards a brother who dare hold a lucrative federal omce tpat. He cures Dotning tor, and support the President of his party at the same time. For it is better to be alone with post office, paper and principle, than with bis paper alene to herd with such us do now revile him.

A OToitier'a cflaeneo It is hard for a young motner who has not yet overcome 'he wayward tendencies of her own youthful nature, to realize tho influence she exerts over her little ones. She is continually burraunded by critical imitators, who copy both her morals and ter manners. As the mother is, so are ber sons and daughters. If a family of children are blessed with an intellleent mother, who is dainty and refined in her manners, and does cot onsider it necessary to be one woman in the pallor and an entirely different person in her every day life, but who is a true mother, and always a tender, charming woman, you will in-varially see her habits of speech and her pleasant manner repeated in her children Great, Touch men, and noisy, active boys will always tone down their voices, and strive to ftep quietly, and to be more mannerly, when she stops to give them a kind word or a oleaiant smile, for a true mother will never fail to say and do a 1 the kind and pletisaht things she can that will In any way help to lift up and cheer those whose lives are shaded with toil and care.
