M. A. Jonnson by tho ladies of Trinity Guild at the Guild rooms last evening was a brilliant affair, aud partook largely of the nature of au ovation. The rooms, which uavo lately been overhauled and brightened and beautified in appearance, were handsomely decorated for the occasion. A large number of the parishioners attended, and the new rector and his wife aud eldest son, Walter De F.

JohnsoD, wero kept busy shaking bauds and responding to cordial greetings for more than two hours. Features of the reception were the selections rendered upon the violin by Mrs Lyman and upon the piano by Mrs. Everhard. No happier company ever assembled in the Guild hall, audit afforded ample evidenca that popularity has immediately followed the advent of Dr. Johnson and his amiable wife In Davenport.

This month they have been coming in more slowly, but the in How a Home Catabluhmant Honied lb I'stnpelltlnn of Chicago Hnue. The chango in the manngeraent of the Harper house at Hock Island has been noted in these columns, together with the fact that the new lessee expected to give the hotel a thorough overhauling and complete renovation and refuting. With some hotels ah overhauling means one thing, with some it means another. With the Harper house it meant that it was to be made as good as new. To that end a large amount of new carpets and a largo uuinber ot chamber suites had to be put in.

It was so largo a contract that the management of the house thought that it could haruly be filled by any firm outside- ot Chicago, and the big houses of that city were asked to figure ou it. The Chicago Carpet company, J. V. Farwell and some of the others did so. In the meantime Clernan Snlzmanu of Hock Island, well known all through tho three cities as dealers in carpets and furniture at lowest living prices, had been doing a little ligurlng themselves.

AVhen the bids were opened there was surprise on all hands. Clemuu Sal.mann had ousted the Chicago concerns from the field of competition. They took tho contract. It calls for 0,000 yards of velvet and Brussels carpeting for eighty bedroom suites, and for a quaintityof other furnishings. CRSMATION P3QSPECT3.

Work Will Probably be Soon Begoa Opoa new ait. Tne tokhalder of the Northwest Cremation society held a meeting at Tamer hall last evening. The atmosphere of uncertainty that pervaded the meetings of a month or bo afro when the site upon which they had begun opsrations wa3 In ligation, seemed to have cleared away. The members looked around upon each other and railed as their ejes met, aad only the look of determination which sometimes overspread their countenances showed that each was determined to push the buiULnj of a crematory until the last obstacle yields to preserving endeaver and the said crematory is ruuuiug in full blast. In short, everyone felt encouraged.

The committee oa sulwcripUons reported 37 new shares taken, or au addition of 8925 to the treasury. This leaves the society in about as good iin-anc'al condition as ever. The committee on grounds reported that they had an optiou upon a lot the West Davenport cemetery, 112x212 feet, for 9150. The board of directors were instructed by vote to buy tho lot iftna title was found to be clear aid satisfactory. So as soon as tho deed is signed building operations will be cooanionced, aud next week will probably see the work well under way again.
